“I just wanna know if you’re reliable…”
“Daddy, I don’t wanna do this anymore!” Tegan cried.
WHAP!
Tegan’s cheek stung from the vicious blow. She didn’t even see the strike coming.
“I’m sorry, honey,” her father apologized. “I’m so so sorry but you know I hate when you go against me.” Robert Hampton lowered himself so that he was eye level with his eight year old daughter. “Daddy loves you. You know that right?”
Tegan reluctantly nodded her head.
“Good. Now help me get her body in the trunk.”
Pouting all the while, young Tegan proceeded with the difficult task of lifting the lifeless woman’s legs while her father carried her by the torso.
Together they dumped the bloodied body inside the trunk of her father’s black 1982 Lincoln Continental.
The moment the woman’s body hit the floor of the trunk, her eyes immediately shot open. “AAAAHHH!!!!!”
Tegan jumped at the earsplitting sound of the woman’s bloodcurdling screams.
“Shit!” Robert hissed, snatching the Swiss army pocket knife from his leather jacket.
Tegan quickly shielded her eyes with her fingers so she wouldn’t have to watch the horrific act her father committed.
“AAAAHHH!”
Tegan awoke in a cold sweat, panting and breathing heavily. The nightmare was all too vivid. Goosebumps formed on her pale arms, and the blonde hairs on the back of her neck stood erect. Tiny beads of sweat formed on her upper lip as she stared into the darkness. Slight chills ran up her spine as uneasiness quickly began to set in.
Even with medication and counseling sessions, Tegan’s painful past still managed to unexpectedly creep up on her in the wake of the night.
Snatching the flimsy sheet off her body, Tegan quickly climbed out of bed and headed towards her door. Peeking through the crack she made sure no one was in sight. Once the coast was clear, she darted across the hall towards Cadence and Meadow’s room.
After scurrying inside their room, she softly closed the door.
Surprisingly Meadow and Cadence were wide awake. They’d been up for hours plotting out their devious plan.
“Couldn’t sleep?” Meadow asked, staring at Tegan’s silhouette.
Tegan, of course, didn’t reply. She simply crawled into Meadow’s bed and snuggled as close to her warm body as she could. There was something about Meadow which Tegan was drawn to. She had a protective quality to her that reminded Tegan of her deceased mother.
Meadow softly ran her fingers through Tegan’s curly hair. “Don’t you think we need more time, Cadence? You know? To really plan this shit out carefully?” she asked.
“The quicker we go through with this shit the less chance of anyone backing out,” Cadence said.
“You mean the less chance of me backing out,” Meadow corrected her.
“Hey, you said it. Not me.”
“Yeah, but you thought it.”
“I just wanna know if you’re reliable,” Cadence said.
“Reliable?” Meadow repeated skeptically. She was lightweight offended. “How long have we been friends? Have I not shown my loyalty to you? Have I not been there for you?” she asked. “I’ve fought with and for you. I’ve told you my deepest, darkest secrets. We’re supposed to be sisters.
